Most wanted

Emperor Penguin on the pack ice

The most wanted bird on Antarctica is most likely the Emperor Penguin. Unfortunately it’s also one of the most difficult to see. They breed in the middel of the Antarctic winter somewhere on the pack ice. This gives only a very small window to get there with a ship. Either there is too much ice which will block the ship, or the ice around the colony already starts to break up. This year we had the latter, meaning we couldn’t land our helicopters on the ice and walk towards the colony.

However, this year we did manage to find a few Emperors resting on the edge of the pack ice, allowing us to have a proper look at these very interesting birds.
