High tide

As I wrote in a earlier post the high tide posed real problems for small mammals. Mice had two options: either find refuge in the higher plants, hoping for the water not to rise even more, or go to the dry road. The ones that went for the road were dry, but also very exposed. To my surprise there were no raptors taking advantage of this, almost free meals. A larger problem posed the cars that were driving over the road. Many mice were found flattened on the road, their intestines spread out. Others came of worse, they were only hit by a car, being crippled and having a slow death.

In the video you get an impression of the effects of the extremely high tide of last week. From the Avocets swimming in the rough sea, to the mice-troubles to the Knots feeding on the mud flats when the water was falling again.
