This Snow Petrel was kind enough to show us something that usually remains hidden under the ice. It managed to catch an ice fish. These fish live all year under the ice and manage to survive in very cold waters. Because of this, they have a sort of anti-freeze in their blood, preventing it from freezing. They also lack hemoglobine, the molecule that usually carries oxygen in the blood and colours the blood red. Because of this, their blood is translucent and has a very low carrying capacity for oxygen. Their heart has tot pump very fast to make sure all their organs get enough oxygen.
