Over the shoulder

Ivory Gull in Hornsund

In bird pictures one normally likes to see the head properly, preferably from the side or the front. Pictures of birds that fly away from the photographer are often not very nice to look at. When I saw this picture the first time, my finger was already hovering over the delete button. However, the longer I looked at the picture, the more I started to like it. It gives sort of the impression that you look over the shoulder of the Ivory Gull to its natural environment, in this case the spectacular scenery of an ice-filled bay in Hornsund. The bird is looking at the ice for something to eat and as a spectator you join him in the search. This effect would not have been reached if the bird was seen from the side or the front.

So if you don’t like this picture the first time, just come back somewhat later and give it another try.
