My travel companion
My life at the moment looks a bit like that of an Arctic Tern. In the northern summer (June – August) I spent time in the high Arctic. There I see these Arctic Terns in summer plumage. This is their breeding ground and here they get their young. When the sun starts to set and the first snow starts to fall, they start to migrate south. Though, where I take the plane and have a nice stopover in the Netherlands, they fly all the way across the Atlantic Ocean south towards South Africa, go across the Southern Ocean towards Antarctica where they spent their winter (although, actually, they have another summer as the seasons on the Southern Hemisphere are different from the ones in the north of course).
At the moment I’m on my way south as well., heading to the Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. With a little luck I might see this bird there as well. By the end of the year, when the terns are back on their breeding grounds, the have covered 70 – 90.000km… And then they do it all again next year.
