Highlights II

Spitsbergen Ptarmigan

Another highlight was maybe a little less spectacular, but one that I liked as well. Most of the summer Spitsbergen Ptarmigans are very difficult to find. They have more or less the same colour as the tundra and rely heavily on that camouflage. They only start to walk away when you are really close. As I work as a guide full time now, I arrive earlier on Spitsbergen as I used to. This means the male ptarmigan still had their white winter plumage and stand out a lot better on the green tundra. And it was also the end of the mating season, so the birds were quite vocal as well. On several occasions this gave me the opportunity to get some nice pictures of these males, like this one.
