Decisions

Bråsvellbreen – Spitsbergen

Sometimes making a decision on an expedition cruise is really difficult. When we arrived at Bråsvellbreen after dinner the weather was far from optimal. The rain was pouring down and the visibility was bad. We could just make out the glacier, but that was all. Only very few people went out on deck to have a look at this spectacular glacier and most of them were expedition staff… So the option was raised to stay there over night and hope the weather would improve for the next morning so we could do a zodiac cruise near the glacier front… But yes, the weather could also stay the same, or even get worse and then there was nothing we could do all morning… After long deliberation it was decided we would stay and take the risk of losing a morning.

And how it payed off… The next morning it completely cleared with blue skies and bright sunshine. Quickly (even before breakfast) the zodiacs were lowered and we had a look at this magnificent glacier with many waterfalls falling of the glacier front. We cruised around for nearly two hours before we had to get back to the ship to have breakfast. Sometimes it’s good to take a bit of risk, and hope for the best. In this case it definitely worked out very well!
