Modern photography

Alpine Rock Cress with a Samsung

With the increased popularity of smartphones most people carry a fairly decent camera with them all the time. Most of the time only used to take selfies or family pictures, but they can also be used for nature photography. While wildlife photography might be a bit out of range for most smartphone cameras, landscape or macro photography is well possible with one. Most camera’s have a small sensor, so they automatically have a relatively large depth of view making it difficult to create a very clean background in macro pictures like the one in this picture. But taking that into account, it can really be convenient to always have a small camera with you for when the light is great or you see something special.

In this case we found Alpine Rock Cress, a rare plant on Spitsbergen, one of the guests didn’t want to carry his big camera all the time or bring extra lenses, so the smartphone was the best alternative.

  1. Yes, good points. The smart phone has allowed me to leave the landscape lens home and just have the telephoto for wildlife shots. The phone also has the gps, bird guide and calls, and other APS at the ready.
