No, this picture is not taken in the Drake Passage, though it definitely could be. It’s taken in the Weddell Sea near the Antarctic Sound. We had planned to do lots of things this day, but mother Nature decided differently. The wind had picked up, to 60 knots during the day and in the evening we had regular gusts above 80 knots (for those not used to these terms, this is almost 150km/h or more as beaufort 12). For us it was reason to abort all plans and even close the outside decks and stay inside. Fortunately the wind didn’t have time enough to built up big waves or swell, so the motion of the ship was quite ok and not many people got sea sick.
For the captain and his officers it was a difficult time, keeping the ship at course and avoiding the growlers (relatively small icebergs, but big enough to do serious damage to the ship) who were often hidden behind the waves.
