Target species

Yellow-browed Warbler

Sometimes I set out with a specific target species in mind. Most of the time this is a species of dragonfly, but occasionally a bird, like the previous weekend. The past weeks quite a lot of Yellow-browed Warblers were seen along the Dutch coast. This tiny leaf warbler breeds in Russia and most of them migrate south from there. However, in the past decennia more and more take a westerly route and make it to the Netherlands. As I don’t go out birding that often anymore in the Netherlands, I had only seen one, many years ago, so this was a good opportunity to catch up…

On our way to the apartment Inge already heard one, but we couldn’t find it back later. The second day we found another one and after a little wait, I managed to see it and even grab a terrible picture. When we had just returned to the hotel in the afternoon, Inge heard another one, close to the hotel. So I quickly grabbed my camera and went outside. This one was a bit easier, as it was flying around in a single shrub. Taking a picture was more difficult however, as the bird was nervously flying up and down the little bush. Often hiding behind some trees, but sometimes nicely showing at the edge. This is one of the few pictures I managed to get from him, but I’m happy with it. It always feels satisfying then you manage to get your target species…
