Team Brunel in the Volco Ocean Race

The Volvo Ocean Race is the biggest ocean sailing race in the world. They started 8 months ago in Alicante, Spain and now they’re approaching the finish in Gothenburg, Sweden. This week they had a quick pit stop in Scheveningen and yesterday they had the restart. As I’ve been following this race from the start (as with previous races), this was a good opportunity to have a look at the boats in real life.

The restart was a big event, with a festival around the harbour where you could enjoy music, have a look inside a Volvo Ocean Race yacht or have a look at the yachts while they were docked. I paid a quick visit to the docks, but quickly headed out to the end of the pier, where the starting line was positioned.

When I arrived at the end of the pier, I was one of the fist, but soon it filled up. Here I had a great view on the starting line, the characteristic tourist pier and the first loop they had to make. The next 6 hours I didn’t move away from this great place and saw all seven boats make a few practice loops and sail away. One of the highlights for many was the Dutch boat from Team Brunel, as shown in this picture.
