Brandenburger Tor, Berlin

When going to a new place, it’s good to prepare oneself. Have a look what pictures you want to take, maybe find a nice angle with google maps, but also have a look at what images have already been made. It’s nice to find your own approach to a famous place. However, sometimes I also just want to take the classic image of a city landmark. When I decided to go to Berlin, one of the first images that came in mind was a picture of Brandenburger Tor at dusk. I assumed it would be nicely lit, so that would make a nice image. Done many times before, but still a nice image.

However, it was not that easy to make. First there were too many people walking through the gate or standing in front of it taking pictures. A bit later it was a bit darker and with a shutter speed of several seconds people walking aren’t visible anymore and nobody was standing in front of my camera anymore. Just as I was setting my camera to the right settings, some projector was switched on behind me, projecting lots of flags and a slogan on the gate. Now I could make a picture that wasn’t made often before, but I would really preferred to take the image without the projection…
