Gully near sea

During my study biology I specialised in ecology and especially in plant-animal interactions. Part of this specialisation was done on Spitsbergen on Barnacle Geese, but another important part was done on the salt marshes in the Wadden Sea. I studied the interaction between Hares, the vegetation and the effect of Cows on this interaction. Really interesting to spent a lot of time in this very dynamic ecosystem. During one excursion we visited many places along the Dutch, German and Danish Wadden Sea. After my studies I specialised more in polar areas and didn’t see many salt marshes anymore.

Last weekend I had a moderator weekend of Nederpix near the shores of the Wadden Sea. I hoped to make many time-lapses, but clear blue skies interfered with that (everybody kept saying how nice the weather was, I disagreed…). On Sunday I joined a colleague moderator to the salt marsh at a place that he knows really well. It was really fun to walk around again, brought back a lot of old and good memories. Unfortunately most of the vegetation had already turned brown as it’s getting late in the season, but it was still really nice to see these true wilderness areas in the Netherlands. This gully makes a nice line in the image. While walking around here, I kept looking for good time-lapse opportunities. This time I didn’t bring all the gear needed, but I’m sure I’ll come back one day when the circumstances are better, to make a nice time-lapse of this gully filling with water at high tide…

  1. Very cool. I just learned about Salt Marshes at the Salt Marsh nature center in New Jersey, it was really interesting seeing all the interconnections between the flora and fauna. Also how important they are to cleaning the water and protecting the land. Thanks
