From when I was a kid, I was interested in recording what I was seeing or hearing. There still seems to be a tape somewhere, where you first hear me say “the sparrow, the sparrow”, followed by a hardly audible ‘chirp chirp’ of a House Sparrow. Later, when I was 16, I got my first SLR. Now I could also record what I was seeing. Not that the first pictures were that good, just a small dot in the center of the frame… Skills and equipment improved over the years, so did the pictures. However, in the beginning I ended up with books filled with pictures and later boxes full of slides, and nobody ever looked at them… The occasional visitor could have a look, or sometimes a lecture, but most of the time my hard-fought images were just gathering dust. With the arrival of the internet this changed. I could now show my results to the Whole Wide World… The first version of my website (which doesn’t exist online anymore) got online as early as 1999… By now this blog almost has 100.000 pageviews (since november 2009).

When I bought the 5D mark II (which is for sale btw, sent me an e-mail if interested and you’re in NL), another new world opened: the world of filmmaking. With the new 5D mark III and the Atomos Ninja I can take this even to another level. I regularly get the question why I switched from photography to filmmaking. Well, I didn’t. I just want to record nature as it is, be it with its sound, with still images or with moving images.  At certain times it’s better just to record sound, other scenes make for better images and others are best fit for movies. For me they all supplement each other and on my website and in my lectures they all come together. One of these examples is the ‘movie’ I made in Finland in 2012: a combination of images, sound and movie. This way I feel I can tell my story in the best possible way and convey the message how beautiful nature is…

  1. Wonderful moments of a beautiful family. It was very nice to see the Wolverine, too. I left you a comment in Vimeo, as well. Greatly enjoyed, thank you, Arjen.

  2. Really enjoyed viewing this video of the bears. Loved seeing the family of bears.
