I just returned from a weekend on Helgoland, Germany. This rock in the middle of the North Sea is every autumn packed with birds who got lost on the North Sea and use this tiny island to fatten up a bit more before they continue their way south. Several of those birds are exhausted from their trip over the North Sea. For those birds getting food is their main priority, making them not care too much about photographers getting closer to take pictures.

Seeing the amount of birds that just made it to this little rock also makes you wonder about the amount of birds that don’t make it across the sea. Most of the birds on the island will probably have ended up on this island by chance, and would otherwise have perished in the sea. For most birds there is not a little rock to save them…
