Of bears and cliffs – part IV
Obviously those parents were not willing to give up their chicks without a fight, but how does one fight a Polar Bear?? They kept flying around the bear, alarming, but there was not much else they could do… In this picture you see the bear catching one of the last chicks of the second ledge. After cleaning this ledge, she couldn’t reach any more chicks on this part of the cliff. So she climbed back up and disappeared out of sight. Two weeks later the bear was seen again, sleeping underneath the cliff, apparently enjoying a nice nap after a hard-fought meal.
For me this is what’s nature photography really about. Telling stories of ecological relations, animal behaviour or other natural things. For me this was one of the most unique moments I’ve ever experienced in the Arctic and I am very happy that I can share this story though my pictures with you. I hope you enjoyed it at least half of how I enjoyed it 🙂
