Bearded Seal on the ice

Another thing that I finally could do again this year was zodiac cruising. On the Noorderlicht we don’t do zodiac cruises as we have only one small zodiac. And besides, the Noorderlicht is so small that we can cruise almost everywhere with the ship itself. This definitely has its advantages, but being in a zodiac between icebergs is also really impressive. Towards the end of the cruise we had a zodiac cruise in Hornsund. After we had a look at some larger icebergs we found a Bearded Seal hauling out on another ice floe. As they can be quite alert (I don’t blame them, with Polar Bears around), we had to switch off our engines. Which is great for the silence of course, but how does one get closer to the seal without an engine? Well, with a paddle of course… Slowly, very slowly we came closer and closer to this seal. And he let us come that close. It was really nice to see such a seal again from up close, even though they just look like a big cigar with a small head…

After we spent some time with the seal, we paddled back, leaving the seal just as we found him. I always like it that way….

  1. Mooi dat je zo dichtbij kwam. Wij konden geen zeehonden op het ijs scoren. Ze doken al in het water toen ze nog maar een stip in de verrekijker waren.
