Cultural slaughter

Every country has its own traditions. In the Netherlands we go nuts when there’s ice on our lakes and canals and our kids behave nicely in this time of year as they are afraid to be taken by Sinterklaas to Spain (as if that would be such a punishment with this weather…). In other countries there are different traditions. I think those traditions are important, they are part of the identity of a country. However, it’s a different story when those traditions harm animals…. In the Netherlands we collect eggs of Lapwings in spring, on the Faroers they kill whales and in Spain they kill bulls… These traditions are often old and continue today as they belong to the identity of the country…. Well, maybe the identity of the country should change in those cases to avoid needless slaughtering of animals. In Catalonia, a part of Spain they banned bullfighting as of January 2012, which is a great start. Now it’s time for the other parts of Spain to do the same. And well, maybe… It could also be a great time for the Dutch to stop collecting Lapwing eggs….

Of course, traditions like this give nice photo opportunities, this picture was taken on Plaza del Toros in Madrid, a bullfighting arena where bullfights are still held today…
