Reindeer lichen

In the previous post I wrote about the large anthills that always surprise me when I walk in the Swedish forests. Another thing that is different from the forests in the Netherlands are the large amounts of lichen. In the Netherlands there are hardly any lichen, only a few growing on the bark of the trees. In Sweden, there are huge carpets of lichen and in some places they’re also hanging from the trees. Especially in the area around Fulufjallet these carpets are huge. Fulufjallet is one of the few places in Sweden without Reindeer herds. As this lichen is the favored food by Reindeer, the lichen density drops dramatically with these animals present. So it’s really nice to have a few places where one can see the true beauty of this symbiosis between a fungus and an algae.
