Siberian Winter Damsels

I like the winter. Cold, snow, ice, all things that I’m attracted to. However, February often is quite a dull month. No snow, too warm for ice and often grey weather and rain. And no insects to photograph. Well, of course there are the winterdamsels. These damsels “hibernate” for 4 months in grass in heathlands. When the temperature gets above 13ºC they start to fly around again. Today was the first time I saw one flying around, for me indicating the end of the winter. Next week the Dutch dragonfly research day and then waiting for the first newly emerged dragonflies, then spring has really started. Looking forward to it!
