Harvest Mouse fleeing for the water

Today there was a strong northwesterly wind in the Wadden Sea area. This caused the tide to be ca. one meter higher as normal, flooding most of the salt marshes along the coast. For birds this is annoying, as they have to find new high water refuges, but for the smaller mammals living on these salt marshes it can be disastrous. In a 50m stretch of higher road I counted 31 dead mice, either drowned or killed by cars. Despite being able to swim, they can’t swim for a long time. This Harvest Mouse had found a last refuge in some reed. Fortunately for him the water wasn’t rising anymore, so I think this one will have survived this ordeal.
