One week
Only a week ago the Netherlands was in the grip of cold weather and snow. As I only had little time to enjoy this short bit of winter, I went to a small ice holes in one of the canals near my home. This ice hole was occupied by several Coots, Mallards and a few Moorhens. The Coots regularly came ashore to feed on the grass. Always a difficult subject to photograph, a largely black bird, with a bit pure white in the snow… I’ve tried it before on a sunny day, but the contrasts were too large at this time, which made it nearly impossible to take a good picture. A week ago the conditions were better, overcast, so with less contrast.
The grey edge at the bottom is a road in front of the bird.
Now, one week later, nearly all the ice has gone and it’s almost 25 degrees warmer….

what a beautiful image
Yes, you certainly hit the jackpot with the exposure in this photo! Lovely photo!
amazing shot, I’ve tried to capture these coots myself a few times, but it’s a hard job to get them right on a picture, I always struggle with the fact that the eyes of the birds will disappear in the black…
What a fantastic shot
nice contrast shot
